地名姓。極めて珍しい姓で、1916～1940年の調査でパリに一件、現在の電話帳では仏西部ロワール=アトランティック県の ピリアック=シュル=メール(Piriac-sur-Mer)に 一件見られるのみである。フランスの政治家、作家フランソワ=ルネ・ド・シャトーブリアン(François-René de Chateaubriand：1768.9.4 Saint-Malo()～1848.7.4 Paris)が有名。
仏西部ロワール=アトランティック県シャトーブリアン郡シャトーブリアン小郡の都市シャトーブリアン(Châteaubriant)に由来。

地名は1028～1050年の間に当地に城砦を築いた ブリエント１世(Brient(ius)：生年不詳、1063年2月9日以前に没)の名に因む。即ち、｢Brient(人名)の城塞｣の意(古仏c(h)astel｢城、砦｣ 9)。このBrientiusの名をローマ人のものとする見解が有るが5、ブルトン人の男名で ある10。人名は(古)ブルトンbrient｢特権、大権｣11に直接由来するか、その派生元で あるブルトンbri｢高貴さ、名誉、尊敬｣12に何らかの接尾辞が接続して生じた名前と見られる。また、ケルト祖語に *brigant-｢高い｣(cf.サンスクリットbṛhant-｢高い、背が高い｣,アヴェスタbərəzant-｢高い｣)が想定されており13、 これに直接由来するものだろう。
一方、地名の古い綴りに語末-tを持たない形もある為、地名の第二要素の人名は古いブルトン語の男名Brian14を 語源としている可能性もある。この人名は、ブルトンbri｢高貴さ｣に由来するブルトン語の男名Bri14の指小形か、 或いはケルト祖語*brigonos｢高い、高貴な、高尚な｣15に遡るものと考えられる。Brient、Brian共にはっきりした 意味を特定するのは難しいが、大体｢高い、偉大な、高貴な｣といった概念を持つ名前である。
